| Sweet 16 for Cine Gael Montreal
As Cine Gael Montreal begins its 16th season tonight of supporting Irish film culture in this city, even its president is astonished. "I found it amazing that we got through the first year, that we got started at all," Lynn Doyle said yesterday. "Somehow we've bumbled along." This year, Doyle and her volunteer team bumbled into co-presenting (with distributor Alliance Films) last night's local public premiere of famed playwright Martin McDonagh's acclaimed film debut, In Bruges, a tragicomic Irish hitman movie starring Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes, three of the world's greatest actors. District Court in Albuquerque swamped by DWI appeals
The state appealed the case, which sat with District Judge Carl Butkus for a year before he took himself off it in November 2007. Now District Judge Stan Whitaker has the case, but he must wait for the On-Record Appeals unit to make its review, research the implications of possible rulings he might make and recommend action, said Duran. Because of the backlog, Duran said she did not know if the unit will get to the Jones case this year. Chief Deputy District Attorney Gary Cade said his office has patience and understands the On-Record Appeals unit is swamped with cases. His office is, too, prosecuting a 13 percent increase in the number of DWI cases filed following arrests and a 55 percent increase in felony DWI cases, for suspects arrested on the fourth or subsequent DWI arrest.
Lynx tells online Casanovas to get real
A tongue-in-cheek digital advertising campaign from deodorant brand Lynx is aiming to help men who spend too much time flirting on Facebook and in chatrooms to learn how to pull women in real life. The campaign, the first work by creative ad agency BBH since it won Lynx's digital business in December, aims to give men "diverse digital content to use to play the seduction game in real life". In recognition of the fact that the web and gadgets are part of most young men's lifestyle, BBH has put a website, called Get in There, at the heart of the campaign. The site, lynxeffect.com, has tools including a range of mobile phone applications that will turn a handset into "a pulling tool, a weapon of mass seduction". Lynx's Fit Girl Finder emits a bleeping sound that "homes in" on an attractive lady.
Boothe, Gray unanimous selections to All-State teams
Sarah Boothe of Warren was the only unanimous choice to the Class 4A All-State girls basketball team released Wednesday, and Hope senior guard Zhaque Gray was the 3A team's only unanimous selection. Boothe, who has signed with Stanford and is considered the No. 1 recruit in Illinois, received first-team votes on all 10 ballots cast by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters. The 6-foot-5-inch center averaged 20.3 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game this season and eclipsed 2,000 career points during the postseason. Gray, who has signed to play at Penn State, received first-team votes on all 11 ballots cast for the 3A team. She averaged 17.1 points, 4.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game and led Hope to the Chicago Public League championship over Marshall.
DSGMC, ex-chief in dock for honouring Tytler
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and its former president Prahalad Singh Chandok are in the dock for honouring Congress leader Jagdish Tytler who was alleged to be involved in anti-Sikh riots of 1984. And the continuation of Giani Surinder Singh, who backtracked from his statements against the same Congress leader in the court as head granthi of Gurdwara Singh Sabha has added fuel to the fire. H.S. Phoolka, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court and author of the book When A Tree Shook Delhi - 1984 Carnage And Its Aftermath, made these sensational revelations here recently. When contacted, DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said the committee was issuing dismissal notice to Surinder Singh on the basis of reports given in the book. He said a show-cause notice was also being served on Chandok as to why he had honoured Tytler, thereby hurting the Sikh sentiments.
Reggae Gold 2008 promises to deliver the best
One of their calendar girls is our reggae gold girl for the 2008 edition and she will be featured in a six-page spread in the magazine. We will be having a big party in New York to promote the release of the compilation," Goring concluded. Grace Jones working on new album Jamaican-born singer/actress and model Grace Jones is reportedly working on new material for release later this year. Jones, who spoke to this writer backstage at the recently-held Reggae Academy Awards, has employed a stellar line-up of musicians and producers to jump start the project. "I worked with a lot of Jamaicans on the album. I have people like Mikey Chung, Sly and Robbie and Uzziah 'Sticky' Thompson," Jones revealed. The still-untitled album is expected to be released on an international imprint.
The fun of not telling lies even when it costs you
I was interviewing to work as a file clerk at the registrar's office at my college."Are you organized?" the potential future employer asked."Mmmm, well, here's the deal. I don't really lose stuff, and my place looks like a mess to everyone, but somehow, I always find what I need."The interview continued."What do you do when you get stressed?" "I don't get too stressed out normally," I answered, but I knew that sometimes I did, and I had to be honest with my answer. "Well, let's say I have a big paper to write, and I've had a hard day. Before I write the paper, I turn on some hip hop music really loud, put on a cowboy hat and this green boa and dance around the room." By the interviewer's face, I could tell this was not the right answer. I never heard back about the job.So I applied someplace else.
Scientists, cadets try to harness wave power
Growing dread over America's oil addiction has redoubled interest in solar panel farms, windmills and even bio-fuel alternatives to foreign petroleum. Now, a small team of scientists and Air Force Academy cadets are attempting to unlock power from an endless energy source: deep-sea waves. The academy's Aeronautics Research Center is designing, on a small scale, submerged platforms fitted with so-called "underwater windmills." The implications are enormous. Replicated on a large scale, researchers believe these offshore units could harness waves — up to 25 times more energy-rich than wind — to power seaside cities. From ocean's surface, these underwater generators would be visible only as buoys warding off passing ships. Although the scientific community's foray into ocean energy has been light so far, producing power from waves "could be a whole industry unto itself," said Thomas McLaughlin, head of the academy's aeronautics research center.
Thinking Right
Whether the limited-government party of Ronald Reagan can win the White House or whether its chances would be improved by reinventing conservatism, is a subtext of a long primary season which is yet to establish a clear Republican front-runner. Throughout the administration of President Bush, the party has wrestled with accommodation with Big Government. That dilemma will persist for decades to come. After the initial success of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, American Enterprise Institute scholar Henry Olsen and others questioned whether Republicans were tempted to invent themselves as a pro-faith, pro-government party akin to Europe's Christian Democrats. "Christian Democrat parties have always distinguished themselves from liberals and socialists," he wrote in The Wall Street Journal, "favoring private property and traditional values while supporting government regulation and taxation to ameliorate what they perceive to be capitalism's defects." Whether the model is perceived as European or as Democrat-light, it is increasingly clear that a limited-government party that exercises fiscal discipline is a tough sell — no reason to give up, but a reason to keep focused on the end game.
Kings notes: Bibby adjusting to Atlanta
Bibby said he's more than comfortable with the pressure on him. "I want it to be on my shoulders," he said before the game. "I'll take the blame. Not many people can say that. I'll take the blame." Woodson said there's no better approach than Bibby's. "That's a good starting point," he said. "He's a 10-year (veteran) who's (under) a lot of pressure to come in and help us get to the playoffs, and that's huge. A lot of guys would run from it. For him to say those things says a lot about his character and how he feels about playing this game." There were plenty of games inside the game, especially between Bibby and Francisco García late. García repeatedly bumped Bibby on the floor while wearing a guilty grin during dead-ball moments and even pretended to lose his way during Bibby's fourth-quarter free throws in an attempt to distract him.
Holla, We Want Pre-nup!
But be careful entering this wildcat's lair—they prowl in packs. I settled in a corner and observed four of them situated in the center of the bar. Each had long acrylic nails and unusually dark tans for January. The ladies were checking out a group of well-built young men of the I-just-turned-21 variety, targeting them like wounded antelopes. Although I doubt the guys minded too much, a wounded antelope never stood such a good chance of getting laid. Within a half-hour, they were doing body shots off one another. Magical. 5717 E. Santa Ana Canyon Rd., Anaheim, (714) 974-5400; www.foxfirerestaurant.com. THE QUIET WOMAN This place is for the undercover gold digger, a person who doesn't want to dig so obviously. But trust me, there is some serious wealth sitting on those bar stools.
Update: Teenager stabbed to death in fight
In my 2 months there I saw a post office get done over, a 10 year old kid driving a van, police chasing various people around (there's always police there) and numerous people walking dogs that anyone can see are 100% illegal. Won't be long before teenager number 6 is killed, the London area over the last 2 years seems rife with teeange killing. Lets hope my police recruitment goes through, the more police out there to prevent it the better. .
